Congratulations!
Today is your day.
You’re off to great places.
You’re off and away.
Oh The Places You’ll Go – Dr. Seuss
Many people find January 1st is a time to reflect back and plan ahead. It is a great opportunity to slow down, take stock of what’s important, and make a plan on how you want to get there. New Year, New Beginning. Life takes on a more optimistic light. We all get a fresh start, a clean slate. But there’s one problem… Today is not January 1st.
My big plans and lofty goals have been brought back down to reality. Old habits have proved harder to crack than my resolutions made them seem all those weeks ago. Now I’m stuck, looking ahead to next New Years when I can really get down to business. Right?
Wrong.
January 1st is arbitrary. Don’t Believe me? Think about this – we all do the same thing on our birthday. The only difference is that the birthday is unique to most everyone. So the day that I do my birthday reflection is different than yours. Once we recognize this, it opens us to the reality that the significance of these two days is invented by us. And if we invented the significance of our birthday, or of New Year’s day, then we have the power to make any day significant. Better yet, we have the power to make every day significant.
If you are unhappy with the story of your life, you don’t have to wait for your birthday or New Years to change. If the story you are telling isn’t taking you to the places you want, you have the power to change that story. Starting today – New Beginning, Fresh Start, Blank Slate.
Happy New Year!
